FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –  On September 29, 2016, Portland’s newest bar and restaurant, ZARZ on First, located at 814 SW 1st Avenue, will open its doors. A neighborhood bar with an approachable food menu, ZARZ will feature elevated classic comfort food and a stellar bar program. Owned and operated by Zaryab Sheikh, guests can escape from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Portland and into an unpretentious, social atmosphere of exceptional food and drink, great conversation, and comfortable, yet refined style in one of Portland’s oldest downtown buildings.

Chef Drew Benyo has created an approachable menu of classic pub favorites like burgers, steaks, and salads, which pay homage to classic neighborhood pub fare. Hints of global cuisine, inspired by Zar’s travels around the world, are also integrated throughout the menu. There is no set theme here – just great food made by great people. Guests can expect to find dishes such as: Pearne Burger with Tillamook white cheddar, caramelized onions, and aioli on a brioche bun with bacon or fried egg; Shrimp Diablo in a garlic chili cream sauce; Duck with champ potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, and cherry and fennel chutney.

Fashioned after Zar’s favorite signature cocktails and regional wines, the cocktail program is made up of standout, premium cocktails made with quality liquor made from top international distillers – including some well-known local Portland distillers. Bar Manager Chris Allen Burton, a former partner of The Rambler in Portland’s Mississippi District, has created a cocktail menu filled with unique interpretations on what he feels are approachable, trending cocktails of the time, but that also reflect the bar’s ambience: warm, inviting, and personable. Some of the featured cocktails include: 1st Street Manhattan with Big Bottom Rye, Carpano Antica, and Angostora; Z Old Fashioned with Buffalo Trace bourbon, maple, Jerry Thomas decanter bitters; Spiced Mule with Vodka, Cointreau, jalapeno, ginger syrup, lime, soda, angostura bitters. 

The real highlight at ZARZ, however, will be the standout happy hour from 4pm-6pm. Guests will be able to enjoy select menu items for $7 or less, including (but not limited to) Chicken Fried Short Ribs ($6), Mussels ($6), and the Pearne Burger ($7). Drink specials will include: Draft beers and all well Drinks ($4); Select cocktails and wines ($5).
