As many of you know, the Winerabblers are riesling fans! In fact, during our very first visit to Brooks Winery we signed up for their wine club… while unemployed no less… that’s how madly in love we fell for their rieslings. Fast forward many years later and we still find their wines tantalizing.
The winery had long outgrown its tiny facility before we discovered them, so they built a beautiful new winery and tasting room that opened less than two years ago. All the additional winemaking space has allowed them to add even more rieslings to their line-up. So with the 2014 vintage, they have started bottling single vineyard dry riesling wines from some of their favorite sites.
The Sunset View Vineyard is a few miles south of the winery, outside the little Oregon town of Rickreall but still in the Eola-Amity Hills sub AVA. With southwest-facing slopes and an elevation of 300′, the conditions are perfect for growing grapes. And riesling is very much a “terroir-driven” wine, in that it is heavily influenced by the soil, climate and farming practices. This factors all make their way into the finished wine.
We found the Sunset View riesling to be very minerally both in the aroma and taste. With aromas of wet concrete, apricots and honeysuckle, it reminded Michele of her early childhood summers in Los Angeles, playing in the pool while the sweet smells of the nearby fruit trees and flowers wafted through the warm air. Sipping this dry riesling, we were again struck by the mineral notes and the high acidity. It’s pucker up tart with flavors of pink grapefruit and slightly underripe apricots, a luscious, textured mouthfeel and a long finish.
If you love good acidity, savor the dreamy texture of this wine without any food. Or drink it with clam chowder, cheese fondue or oysters. With food or without, your mouth will thank you!
