Grapes for this wine were sourced from the Mount Richmond Vineyard, located in the Willamette Valley’s Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Owned by Elk Cove Vineyards, Devona is one of very few wineries with access to this fruit. Once picked, owner John Abbott trucked the freshly harvested grapes up to his winery in Walla Walla, Washington for processing.
This vintage started early as the weather warmed and just didn’t quit– becoming one of the shortest we’ve ever had. Hot temperatures over the summer, especially in August, led to smaller grapes with lower hydration levels. And flavors were nicely concentrated by the time harvest arrived in September.
Color:
Black raspberry red
Bouquet:
Earthy aromas of warm chestnuts, forest floor and gravel dust combined with red fruits, including ripe raspberries, bing and sour cherries, along with cherry pie, fresh out of the oven.
Palate:
This Pinot noir was tart with bright acidity and a bramble berry quality– lots of raspberries, tayberries, and black raspberries filled my glass. I also tasted black cherries and sarsaparilla root as the wine was exposed to more air. With lovely, refined texture and mouthfeel, the finish was quite smooth and longlasting.
Food pairing suggestions:
Lasagna, grilled salmon, wild mushroom risotto.
SRP $50
