2018 Smoky Rose Cellars Syrah
Walla Walla
Columbia Valley
Washington
15.5% alcohol
Cork closure
Color:
Deep magenta purple
Bouquet:
Fruity aromas of bing cherries and wild strawberries blended wonderfully with earthy notes of espresso and toasted marshmallows. With more air, this Syrah developed whiffs of tomato leaf and a distant campfire. Coffee, marshmallows, wild strawberries… I was suddenly flooded with memories of summer camping trips when I was a kid as I sniffed this wine!
Palate:
My first sip was smooth and juicy, filled with flavors of bing cherries and baking spices. As this wine sat in my glass, exposure to oxygen brought out notes of white pepper, vanilla, nutmeg, and mocha, along with prickly tannins. With more time out of the bottle, it developed the added flavors of plums and cherry jam that extended into a long, smooth finish.
Food pairing suggestions:
Pair this Syrah with wood-fired veggie pizza with mushrooms, grilled baby back ribs, mushroom lentil soup with kale, Philly cheesesteak bubble up casserole with smoked gouda cheese. (FYI, this wine begs for mushrooms and/or meat!)
