We often hear about wine and food pairings but did you know that saké is quite versatile and goes well with many types of foods? Saké Fest PDX returns to Portland this Thursday, offering the opportunity to try numerous food and saké pairings. With five chocolatiers and 15 local food vendors, attendees can taste limitless combinations.
The festivities begin with a traditional barrel breaking ceremony meant to welcome all and bring good luck. Just be sure not to stand too close, unless you want a light saké shower. Guests will also be treated to a special Asian American drumming performance by the award-winning ensemble Portland Taiko.
“Participants attending Saké Fest PDX will experience about 130 saké varieties and learn how to pair it with any type of food from some of our best local chefs.” said Marcus V. Pakiser, Saké Fest PDX spokesperson and internationally renowned saké sommelier. He continued, “Samples of Japanese and American brands and premium and several rare saké will be available, as will regionally micro brewed ‘jizake,’ which means small, regional saké brewer.”
So surround yourself with excellent food, music and more saké than you may ever find in one room. Get the chance to speak with saké experts, learn how it’s made and best enjoyed. Plus a portion of the net proceeds benefit the Japan-America Society of Oregon.
