While Müller-Thurgau, pronounced MEW-lehr TUR-gow, is Germany’s second most planted wine grape, it’s pretty rare in the United States. According to state stats, there are less than 70 acres planted in Oregon. I’m pretty sure I’ve tasted all the dry Müller made in Oregon and do believe our climate is very well-suited to the varietal!
Bouquet:
Tart aromas of green apples and lemongrass melded into freshly grated ginger and ripe pears.
Palate:
Crisp, dry, and tart– this is a really great introduction to Oregon Müller-Thurgau! With upfront flavors of green apples, Asian pears, and gooseberries, then more nuanced notes of ginger, lemongrass, and green grapes emerged. Suddenly, apple pie hit my palate! That’s right, baked apple pie, including the crust. The wine ended in a lovely, spicy finish that left me ready for my next sip.
Food pairing suggestions:
Asparagus risotto // grilled swordfish steaks // pork fried rice
