Vino Vasai, which is Italian for wine of the potter, dubs itself as “Your Favorite Very Small Winery” in the hopes they will wow you with their wine, clay pottery, and hospitality! Located within the Willamette Valley’s newly appointed Laurelwood District AVA, owners Bill and Sandy Sanchez produce fewer than 1000 cases annually, allowing them time to focus on every vineyard guest that comes to visit. While you’re there, be sure to ask them to share stories about the Italian influence on Sandy’s side of the family.
Harvest 2020 was a challenging one in Oregon… not only was the pandemic still well underway but fires raged throughout much of the state. Sadly, Potter’s Vineyard was shrouded in smoke so the difficult choice was made not to make Pinot noir last year. However, after the smoke cleared and the grapes were ripe, the Sanchezes decided to pick their estate fruit and amended their winemaking techniques in order to avoid any smoke-tainted rosé wine. Freshly harvested Pinot noir grapes were pressed immediately, thereby eliminating prolonged grape skin-contaminated contact with the juice. In an effort to further reduce the possibility of smoke taint, the first part of the free run was dumped, leaving clean grape juice with which to make their rosé. After fermenting and aging in stainless steel tanks, the wine was bottled in April and is now ready to drink.
