Weather during the 2021 growing season just couldn’t make up its mind! Warm spring temperatures awakened the grapevines earlier than usual. Then a significant rain event knocked many flowers off the plants during bloom, leading to less fruit set. This was followed closely by a record-setting “heat dome” that lingered over Oregon for several days. Fortunately, it occurred during a grapevine growth phase that didn’t cause any major damage to the plants or fruit. Rain returned during harvest, less common recently but something most Oregon winemakers and grape growers have experienced. All of these different weather events contributed to a Pinot gris both flavorful and aromatic with abundant tropical fruit notes. Drink it over the summer or when you’re in need of a tropical island getaway.
