Oregon’s wine industry is unlike any other in a number of ways. One of the most unique differences is the non-profit ¡Salud!, now in its 26th year. With a clear mission of providing healthcare access to the seasonal workers working in the vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley, the organization relies on the generosity of many to meet its goals.

Once a year, ¡Salud! has a two-day event that celebrates some of the bestPinot noir producers in the Willamette Valley. As its primary source for fundraising, wineries in Salud!’s Vintner’s Circle prepare special cuvee blends of their very best Pinot noirs to be included in an exciting auction. The first evening’s auction takes place at Domaine Drouhin Oregon where wine lovers can taste a preview of these cuvees, many poured by the winemakers themselves out of sample bottles since the wines are often still in barrel.

As the evening proceeds and excitement builds, the auction lots begin to close, all while the “big board” screens flash the cases sold. ¡Salud! only sells wine by the case and no more than five cases are available from any winery. Those limited quantity cuvee blends produced by some of Oregon’s best winemakers become hot commodities during the frenzied last minutes of each auction lot.

The second night’s dinner and gala in Portland involve a decadent meal and an exciting live auction with everything from weekend getaways in wine country to a new French oak barrel. All auction proceeds go back to the mission of supporting the healthcare of our seasonal vineyard and winery workers.
