Stumped on what to get your mom for Mother’s day this year? Make it memorable by taking her on a passport tasting to the many urban wineries celebrating Portland moms on Saturday, May 12.

In a very short time, urban wine making has become quite trendy within the city limits of Portland. These innovative pioneers created the PDX urban wine group to spread the word that you don’t need to travel to the Willamette Valley to go wine tasting. Although you won’t get the scenic vistas of vineyards, you will find enthusiastic winemakers happy to share their urban-made libations with you and mom.

With gas prices at record highs, why not spend less time driving and kick off mother’s day weekend early by visiting these wineries on Saturday, May 12 from 12-5PM? Not only will you and mom get to taste a wide variety of locally made wines but passport holders for this 1-day event will get discounts on bottles and entry into a drawing for exciting gifts. Just pick up your passport at the first winery you visit and have it stamped at each destination.

Ryan Sharp at ENSO Wines says:

We’re so excited about our first passport tasting. This is a great chance to see all the different wineries throughout Portland. We’ll have 3 new wines available at ENSO; our 2011 Pinot gris, Riesling & Rosé.

Starting a winery is expensive and some members of the group are making wine in a garage, without the room to host wine tasters. Those wineries without public spaces can be found pouring their wines with friends who do have tasting rooms. Anne Hubatch of Helioterra Wines can be found offering her wines for taste and sale at ENSO Wines. Vincent Fritzsche of  Vincent Wine Company will be pouring and selling his wines in Seven Bridges’ tasting room for this first passport weekend.

Jill Ross at Seven Bridges Winery says:

We’re happy to show off our newly opened  tasting room and will be previewing some of our yet to be released 2009 wines along with sampling what is left of our inaugural vintage.

So rather than giving flowers this year, take your mom on an urban wine tasting adventure around the streets of Portland this Mother’s Day.
