Winerabble turns 11

Winerabble celebrates 11 years

As Winerabble celebrates 11 years and I reflect back on the last year, we’ve accomplished some very important things worthy of highlighting.

Website redesign

I completely redesigned the Winerabble website over the holidays. It was a long time coming and could no longer take the broken bits within the WordPress theme I was using. A fortuitous text exchange with my web designer neighbor led to a new theme and a lot of new content! (Kath, thanks for the advice!) Along the way, I learned a lot of new skills and reorganized all of the content, making it easier to find exactly what you’re looking for. I got to add some new features I’ve been dreaming about for years. The biggest one is icons in our tasting notes! As with many people, I’m a very visual person, and rarely, if ever, see tasting notes displayed pictorially. Not sure why that is… I hope you like the new format for both tasting notes as well as the entire website.

Thank goodness for google alerts! I have Google alerts to notify me when news is posted on various subjects. If you don’t yet have alerts on topics you care about, read on! Then set them up.

One fateful morning, while scrolling through my alert emails, I discovered one for a job posting for the editor position at Oregon Wine Press. I emailed then editor Hilary Berg, whom I have known for years, and asked for the scoop. She confirmed that, after 16 years, she was in fact leaving OWP. She casually asked if I was interested in the role. Without hesitation, I replied with an emphatic YES! Only after chatting more with her did I realize my entire career has prepared me to lead the magazine. A zoom interview with the associate publisher confirmed my initial thoughts and a job offer soon followed. In this case, an opportunity like this only comes around once every 16 years… how could I turn it down?!

After working in Oregon’s wine industry for over 11 years, I’m thrilled to be able to share the state’s many wines with an even larger audience. I am also grateful for the trust of Ossie, my associate editor; Jennifer, the whip-smart copy editor I borrow from the News-Register; and the many freelance writers and photographers with whom I get to work. And my gratitude extends to the many wineries, grape growers and winemakers whose efforts I get to share with both Winerabble and OWP readers. I might be stating the obvious here… there would be no magazine without these passionate folks making and sharing their wines with the public.
