You may not know it but Oregon has a very dramatic soil history. The Pacific Ocean once covered much of the state, gently depositing fertile soils onto the bottom of its floor. But since we live in the Ring of Fire, not all stayed tranquil once the ocean waters receded. Massive upheaval from deep within the Earth caused many earthquakes and now dormant volcanoes erupted often, spewing volcanic lava into the air, forever changing the landscape of the area.

Ancient sea beds were thrust high by mighty Earth forces and volatile volcanic eruptions with spectacular lava flows created new peaks and filled in low valleys. Recurring Missoula floods brought rich soils to the Willamette Valley as the giant ice dam broke again and again. Torrential winds also brought windblown Loess soil that dusted the Northern Willamette Valley region.

The grape growers and winemakers of the Chehalem Mountains and Ribbon Ridge sub-AVAs of the Willamette Valley pay tribute to this tumultuous past with their premiere Origins ’13, a celebration of wine and food. This group of adventurous people with the same goal of producing world-class wines have created this event as an homage to their unique soil history. Origins ’13, taking place at Arborbrook Vineyards, gives participants the opportunity to stroll over these soils as they walk among the vines, feast on dishes created by well-known chefs and talented newcomers while sipping wines made by skilled individuals who cherish this dramatic history.
